Cheryl and Jim had a dream and 35 acres of land in the foothills. With gardening books in hand, the new deck constructed and the general spot picked they started interviewing garden designers. Alpine Gardens was chosen to make their dream of a country English style Garden come alive and construction of the hardscape started in the winter. They wanted an area that was very colorful but could handle large groups of people to entertain. The construction process began with the repair of a failing wall under the deck and the handling of some tricky drainage areas. Once those items were handled large stone steps were installed and an area for the hot tub was created. A large flagstone patio was installed. A low voltage lighting system was installed to add to the beauty and safety of evening entertaining. Soil was prepared for planting and their existing irrigation system was extended. Much to the delight of the native deer and rabbit population the plants were brought in and immediately upon planting the plants had to be protected from those creatures so that they had a fighting chance to get started. A mixture of specialty evergreens and colorful perennial and shrub plantings were used to give this tough western garden, good bones. Cedar mulch was used to help maintain even soil moisture and keep the weeds at bay. Alpine Gardens has provided bi weekly gardening visits to help this busy couple get this garden started until they retire to have more time to work on their dream project. Their parties have included fund raising concerts for some favorite charities and thus the garden name- Little Red Rocks.
